I'm glad you got a recording. What I heard was a soft chortling—you can hear
something like it on the allaboutbird.org site recording, mixed in with some
sharper notes. It was so soft (at a certain distance) it was hard to tell if
it came from the bird or someone else. But there was no other bird activity
around (not surprising, I guess, given the shrike's diet), and I could see its
beak moving.

I’m interested in the vocals. The only one I saw in Lubbock was a 1st year
bird making a sound like a woodpecker slowly tapping on a tin roof. Searched
Cornell’s library but can’t find anything similar. What was this one like?

The northern shrike was continuing on the railroad track. It did go out into
the field but it went back to the track after s about an hour or so. Seen by
several. Jennifer and I got sound recording as well which was a treat.
