Hi All,
I saw a silent Wood-Pewee the other day and noticed that Western Wood-Pewee
is the only non-rare choice in our eBird checklists now. It got me
wondering about what changed since I remember Western, Eastern, and
Western/Eastern all being non-rare entries. I looked at eBird data for the
two species across all years and there is a lot of overlap between them in
our area. Looking at just this year, there is not, but Eastern has been
reported as close as Amarillo and Wichita Falls, although none have been
reported on the caprock.
Does anyone know what caused this change in our eBird checklists? Has our
understanding of the range of these two species evolved to the point that
if I see a silent Wood-Pewee in our area, it is safe/acceptable to just put
it down as a Western?
