Today I visited the playa off of Owl Road in Hockley County, near where my
daughter rides. The playa was frozen solid, but that didn't stop what was
by my rough count some 1550 Sandhill Cranes standing there, looking like
ice skaters crowding a rink. Curiously all the cranes were on the ice—not
one of them in the fields surrounding it, where I've seen them feeding
before.
