*Research internship Required for water quality monitoring field and lab
work in Uttarakhand.*

The University of Birmingham (UoB) is seeking a *research intern (RI)* to
work as part of a groundwater spring monitoring study in *Uttarakhand
(Dehradun and Nainital districts*). The RI will be directly
working/reporting with a PhD scholar from UoB.  The work is part of an
hydro-ecological study to understand the impact of land-use on water,
especially the micro-biota, the aquatic communities inhabiting the
high-altitude springs and streams from different geologies and forest
types, and the impact of anthropogenic pollution in Western Himalaya using
cutting edge sensing methods. The post will last 8 weeks, starting
tentatively *February – April 2023*. The study is exploring the use of
*cutting-edge
field-deployable techniques for detecting microbial contamination in
drinking water*. We will be collecting and analysing water samples from a
range of spring environments focusing on the link between fluorescence and
faecal contamination. The study involves some preparatory work prior to the
PhD scholar’s arrival and then accompanying them to assist throughout the
field work. There is the opportunity to *gain experience in field-based
fluorescence monitoring* and data interpretation.

*Role & Responsibilities*

   - Water sample collection and basic water quality assessment using
   electro-chemistry and colorimetry (training provided).

   - Assist with on-site water quality measurements using cutting edge
   fluorescence technology.
   - Assist in the laboratory with the culturing of bacteria (faecal
coliforms) and the setup of a field-based laboratory.
   - Field logistics management, sample storage, sample processing and data
   entry.

*Requirements *

   - Experience using water quality instrumentation (e.g. pH, conductivity,
   etc.) is desired.
   - Experience with standard lab practices and/or culturing bacteria
inline with the Most Probable Number method (this will be taught if no
   experience).
   - General lab experience is desirable, particularly regarding sterile
   working practices.
   - English proficiency, both written and verbal, is essential.
   - Field experience in mountainous environments is desirable.
   - Time required:  8 weeks (Feb – April 2023).
   - Educational qualifications: Above 12th Standard. Undergraduate or
Master’s students with lab experience are encouraged to apply.
   - Study Area: Villages and Towns in Uttarakhand (Dehradun and Nainital
   districts).
   - Travel, accommodation and subsistence support will be provided on a

We follow Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) principles in hiring and
