Call for Interns
Short term internship opportunity for the project – Following the
Smooth-coated otter family
Location: WILD OTTERS field base, Chorao Island, Goa
Duration: 2nd May – 22nd May 2017
We aim to empower budding researchers by providing an opportunity to
be involved in active scientific research.
Interns at WILD OTTERS will be trained on important research skills
that will enable them to take their career to the next level. Each
intern will receive individual attention and also be given the freedom
to learn by experience. The progress will be regularly monitored and
assessed. In addition interns will be required to review scientific
literature that will be provided to them. By the end of their
internship, each intern will receive a certificate of completion.
Project overview – Following the Smooth-coated otter family
We focus on locally found otter species and we go deeper into
understanding their ecology and behavior. This project involves
tracking 3 Smooth-coated otter families in 3 different mangrove zones.
This project is aimed at understanding the behaviour and adaptation of
Smooth-coated otter families in mangroves. Behavior documentation
includes movement patterns, foraging behaviour as well as identifying
core areas within each zone.
Interns will be trained to
• Conduct field surveys in mangroves
• Identify Smooth-coated otter signs
• Set up and monitor trail cameras
• Use GPS and related software for digital mapping
• Analyse and sort content from trail camera data
Eligibility Criteria
• Applicant must be 18 years of age or above
• Have a keen interest in scientific research and field work
• Be ready to work for long hours on field or at the base
• Be physically fit and able to stay focused for field work in a
hot and humid environment
• Be ready to adapt to unforeseen circumstances and flexible to change
• Have good written and spoken English
• Have a sound knowledge of basic computer applications such as
Word and Excel
• Be ready to work in a team as well as respect individual spaces
Internship Fee
• Rs. 1000/- per day ( For nationals from 1st world countries)
• Rs. 500/- per day ( For nationals from other countries*)
• The fee includes shared accommodation and meals, training
charges, equipment usage charge and travel expenses to the field
sites.
