Dear All,
We are looking for volunteers/ project interns for assisting the
research team conducting investigations on mammal distribution and
abundance in the high altitude regions in and around Gangotri National
Park under the supervision of Dr. S. Sathyakumar from Wildlife
Institute of India, Dehradun. We seek volunteers/ interns who have
passion and commitment to work in the high altitude regions of the
Himalaya. The volunteer / intern is expected to carry out field
activities that include sign surveys and camera trapping for targeted
wildlife species: Snow leopard, Tibetan wolf and Brown bear. Other
works include scan counts for mountain ungulates and abundance
estimation for rodents, habitat evaluation, scat collections and other
works.
This will be an opportunity for students to experience unique
wilderness of alpine, subalpine and trans-Himalayan habitats that are
home to species such as Snow leopard, Tibetan wolf, blue sheep,
marmot, pika etc. Volunteers/ interns selected under this project will
get hands on experience in field methods. Only candidates who are
willing to work under arduous field conditions in remote high altitude
areas with minimal logistic support need apply.
Terms and conditions for volunteering:
1. The internship / volunteering period ranges from a minimum of
3 months to maximum 9 months.
2. We encourage all candidates who have graduates and above with
a basic science background.
3. The expenses for the volunteers’ stay and field expedition
gear (camping equipment) will be taken care of, however travel
expenses to and from the field site will have to be borne by the
applicants.
4. Applicants must be physically fit and equipped (shoes/
clothes) to work in higher altitude areas and cold conditions. The
surveys will be in an expedition mode requiring the team to be away
from the base camp for 10-15 days at a stretch.
5. Upon successful completion each volunteer will be given a
certificate of volunteering.
