Dear All,
Bats have been on Earth for more than 50 million years, they are the second
largest order of mammals, and are widely dispersed across six continents.
Many have adapted to urban environments, living in backyard gardens, parks
and even roosting under bridges. Bats provide enormous benefits to vital
ecosystem services in the form of insect pest consumption, plant
pollination, and seed dispersal. Globally, 40% of all bat species are
currently listed as either threatened with imminent extinction, nearly
threatened, or data deficient by the International Union for the
Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Much more needs to be done to ensure the
survival of bats around the world. While the killing of bats will not have
any effects on the spread of COVID-19, it would adversely affect the
conservation status of bat populations. Hence, to save them, the cave bats
were also declared as āInternational Cave Animal of the Year 2022ā.
Late Dr. Ravi Sankaran (Oct 4, 1963 ā Jan 17, 2009) was an ornithologist
who dedicated his life to biodiversity research and conservation throughout
India. In his last days he was heading the SƔlim Ali Centre for Ornithology
and Natural History (SACON) as Director. Along with his efforts for the
cave-dwelling Swiftlets, it was his vision to set up a unique organization
for the conservation of caves and karst. The demise on 17th January 2009 of
this conservation champion was not only a significant loss to the
conservation field in India but also to the development of the less
explored speleological research and conservation. This 17th January, 2023
on his 14th death anniversary, the Speleological Association of India is
proud to organise the 1st Dr. Ravi Sankaranās Lecture to continue his
legacy of exploring the subterranean ecosystems of our country.
Dr. Sanjay Molur was a close friend and companion to Dr. Sankaran. He is
passionate about researching bats in India. Dr. Molur, during the lecture
will take us through a journey into the world of bats in caves in India
touching upon some case studies on the species, their status, and
conservation needs.
