We are looking for an intern to assist in a study that examines the effect
of stress on social behaviour of the agamid lizard, *Psammophilus dorsalis*,
at the Macrophysiology lab, Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc,
Bangalore. The project and job description are given below in detail.
*Project Title: Study on the effect of stress on the social behavior of the
agamid lizard species, Psammophilus dorsalis, at Dr. Maria Thaker's Lab,
CES, IISc, Bengaluru. *
*Duration:* 2-3 months, starting from February 2023
*Description of project: *Principal Investigator ā Dr. Maria Thaker
This project investigates the effects of early life stress on the
development and social behavior, in the agamid lizard species *Psammophilus
dorsalis*. Early life stress can affect an animalās growth, development,
and survival. It can also potentially affect the expression of flexible
adult traits such as sexual, territorial, foraging, and anti-predator
behaviour as well as the underlying hormonal mechanisms mediating these
behaviours. This project aims to study the effect of early-life stress on
morphological development as well as con-specific aggressive behaviour
displays and its underlying hormonal mechanisms. Morphological data will be
collected from animals maintained at a semi-natural field site. Behavioral
assays of the lizards will be conducted in the lab. Selected candidates are
expected to tag along with the PhD student and help out with experiments
both in the lab as well as in the field.
*Description of job:*
Candidates will be expected to assist in:
1. Conducting experiments in the field, such as taking morphometric
measurements, digital photography, x-ray imaging, etc.
2. Behavioral assays conducted in the lab.
3. Scoring of image and behavior data.
4. Maintaining the captive reptile population.
5. Any other requirements relevant to the project as and when necessary.
*Candidate requirements:*
1. Must be willing to relocate to North Bangalore for the duration of
the project. Candidates already based in Bangalore will be preferred.
2. Candidates need to apply for a minimum duration of 2 months. However,
candidates willing to join for longer durations will be preferred.
3. Experience in handling reptiles is preferrable, though not
necessary. But the candidate must be willing to learn handling reptiles
during the internship.
4. Should be willing to work in not-so-comfortable outdoor conditions.
5. Candidates enthusiastic about animal behavior studies including
animal colors, communication, behavioral endocrinology, etc are highly
welcome to apply.
*NOTE:* *Please note that this is an unpaid position. However, authorship
will be provided depending on the candidateās work.*
