Dear YETI Members,
Active conservation is the need of the hour at Chamba valley. The Himalayan
Langur Project by Zoo Outreach Organisation and WIldlife Information
Liaison Development Society is currently carrying out stakeholder-run
habitat restoration and human-wildlife coexistence (HWCx) programmes. The
area of focus is around the Khajjiar-Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary and lies
within the recently demarcated eco-sensitive zone of the sanctuary. The
project will operate from its base in Gajnoi, Chamba.
*Location:* Gajnoi, Chamba
*I. Unpaid Internship opportunity*
The position would involve studying the distribution and behaviour of the
Chamba Sacred Langurs, native flora of the region, helping in setting up a
native plant nursery, vegetation sampling, participating in restoration
programs along with the communities & other stakeholders, and to educate,
raise awareness, build capacity, and train stakeholders in local ecological
sustenance. Apart from the fieldwork, the intern would also be required to
help in project planning, scientific writing, and team management.
*Internship duration:* Up to six months.
*Internship starts:* June 2023
*Minimum qualifications and expectations*
- Bachelors or Masters in any field
- Physically fit to endure long field hours and rough working conditions
and trek 10km/day in hilly terrain
- Team player, comfortable with shared accommodation, and basic facilities
- Ability to communicate in Hindi
- Minimum commitment of 1 month
*Students who have recently completed their Bachelor's or Master's degrees
and are looking for field or research experience, this is an opportunity
for you.* People currently involved in courses are *NOT ENCOURAGED *to
apply for the* intern *position as it requires longer on-field commitment.
*II. Opportunity to carry out Master’s thesis*
If you have a thesis idea, and plan to work on primates or along the
western Himalaya with communities or plants, the Himalayan Langur Project
is the place for you. As a student, it is your responsibility to apply for
the different permissions you need. As part of the team, we look forward to
seeing you volunteer for the different activities mentioned above during
your free hours.
*Project starts:* June 2023
*Desired skills for both Interns and Thesis students*
- Experience with fieldwork
- Basic knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint etc
- Experience working in teams
- Physically fit to trek long distances
- Enthusiasm to work towards conservation

Sanjay Molur etc.
- Opportunity to interact with communities, women self-help groups,
children, and the forest department.
- Learn about native flora in western Himalaya.
- Opportunity to interact with indigenous communities.
- Learn and be part of a native flora restoration project.
- Certificate/letter of participation at the end.
Travel to and from the field site, accommodation, and food will be borne by
the Volunteers/Thesis students.
