*Research assistant position at the Thenmala Macaque Project in Kerala,
India*
Thenmala Macaque project is looking for a research assistant to help in
collecting data for a new project on bonnet macaques' behaviour at the
Thenmala, Kerela. Specifically, we are looking for a person to assist a PhD
student in collecting data for behavioural determinants of stress. The
position requires focal behavioural data and sample collection, starting in
November 2022, for a 6-month period with a possibility of extension.
The work is physically and mentally demanding, with typical days consisting
of approximately 10 hours of walking in a semi-urban region, often through
the anthropological landscapes, with an average of 8-10 km per day in
tropical conditions.
*Qualifications and experience:*
We are looking for a motivated, disciplined and patient person, who is able
to systematically collect, annotate and store behavioural data. The
candidate is additionally expected to help with the collection of faecal
samples.
The applicant must have at least a BSc in biology, zoology, veterinary
medicine, anthropology, or a related discipline. Previous field experience
with primates or other animals and experience in behavioural data
collection will be viewed as a great additional asset.
Other qualifications include the capacity to work and live in a distant
place under basic circumstances, a high degree of physical fitness to carry
out fieldwork for up to 10 hours at 28-35 degree Celsius, strong social
skills, the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment, and knowledge
of basic equipment maintenance (e.g., computers, video cameras).
*Salary/Remuneration:*
12,000 INR/month. Charges to travel to the field site will be covered up to
1,000 INR/month. Accommodation charges will not be covered.
