(University of Copenhagen). This is a reopening of a position announced in

2**nd*, and interviews will be held in late August with expected starting
date at the end of the year.
*We offer a PhD IN MACROECOLOGY OF THE ANTHROPOCENE* to work on
biodiversity responses to land use change scenarios from local to
continental scales. We are particularly interested in 1) testing the use of
Digital Era products (very high-resolution LiDAR, Google ground imagery) to
quantify biodiversity along land use gradients, and 2) developing
simulations of biodiversity responses under scenarios of future land use
change for conservation planning. Denmark will be used as a case study for
developing novel imagery-based measures and test them with local field data
hosted at CMEC and/or collected by the PhD student. Projections across
Europe under global change scenarios will allow assessing the impacts of
different land use planning recommendations for preserving biodiversity.
The project is tightly linked to a larger study that tests hypotheses about
the synergistic effects of land use and climate change on biodiversity, and
explores new approaches for quantifying land use change.
We are looking for a highly motivated, creative, and independent student
with excellent analytical and programming skills. Depending on the research
interests and background of the student, the project can have more emphasis
on the development of new informatics tools (e.g. using image recognition
and deep learning techniques), tested on ecological questions.
Alternatively, the emphasis can be on the ecological, field, and
conservation aspects of the project, for which the candidate will
preferably have a solid background in natural history and field experience.
