was started in the mid-2014 for crowdsourcing information on local
environmental issues and community initiatives. With almost half of Indian
population connected with the internet, we believe that by
exploiting available ICT (Information & communication technology) tools, we
can enhance public participation and bring environmental awareness to them.
*With EcoMaps, anyone can report a local environmental issue such as air,
noise, water pollution, waste disposal, sanitation issues, illegal mobile
towers and wildlife conflicts faced in your locality. *Over time, this
*open-source *database can be used by any member of the community including
home-makers, collegians, researchers, lawyers, docters, activists,
municipal officials, office-goers and students to utilize this as per their
requirement.
This mode of public participation requires little time and effort *while* makes
for a *power contribution towards* *environmental justice. *Each report
matters is like a drop adding up to an ocean of *data that covers all of
India*.
When you engage with EcoMap, you also engage with a growing community of
like-minded folks that want to improve the environment of the country.
Besides, this growing community empowers itself through local environmental
laws and policy that we will communicate with them.

The idea of EcoMap India was simple to execute but difficult in its
premise. It came from my experience working on citizen science project,
using technology such as crowdmapping for women's safety work and an
overwhelming desire to bring awareness and increase participation from
people in local environmental issues.
