Can you please circulate this? Thank you. - Avik Ray** *--------------* *Research Assistants (2) for Biotechnology Lab for Conservation* *Basudha Biotechnology Laboratory for Conservation*, supported by *Community Revival Foundation*, is established in Kolkata, with the explicit aim to document, characterize and promote conservation of the country’s biological heritage. An outfit of Basudha (www.cintdis.org/basudha), this lab is committed to conserving the country’s biodiversity, and engaged in molecular biological study of folk crops and their wild relatives; examining the genetic diversity and history of Indian flora and fauna; and tissue culture of critically endangered plants, to promote their conservation *in situ*. *Brief Job Description:* *1. **Evolutionary genomics of domesticated rice**:* Rice landraces carry unique morphological and molecular signatures of domestication. Hundreds of land races of rice are adapted to local soil and environmental conditions, and include folk varieties that can withstand soil salinity, drought, submergence and different pests and pathogens. Our primary aim is to (a) identify certain domestication traits, and assess their genetic base, and (b) characterize the adaptive traits at genetic and physiological levels, using molecular and biochemical analyses. *2. **Evolutionary history of selected Indian plants:* We intend to explore the history of colonization of rare endemic plants, using molecular markers. *3. **Tissue culture of Rare and Endangered plants:* We aim to propagate tissue culture clones of rare and critically endangered taxa. The *routine job* of the researcher would include mostly molecular (DNA extraction, PCR, sequence editing and alignment), and some biochemical analyses. *Qualifications and skills*: Master’s degree or equivalent in Biology, Ecology, Agriculture, Botany, Biotechnology, Forestry, or other related discipline. *Desirable skills*: In-depth understanding of evolutionary biology of the plants and/or competence in statistical analyses will be especially useful in the work. *Project duration: *Initially for twelve months, extendable. *Start date: *Tentatively March 1st, 2015. *Fellowship: *INR 12,000 p.m. consolidated, depending on expertise. For out-station candidates, HRA of INR 1000 will also be provided. The candidate will be a co-author in all scientific publications ensuing from his work. The interview will be held in early February, 2015. *Send Application and CV with subject line ‘**application for research assistant position’** to:* *Dr. Avik Ray <*avikray.ri@xxxxxxxxx> *AND* Dr. Debal Deb < basudha2010@xxxxxxxxxxx> -- SERB-DST-young scientist Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) Srirampura, Royal Encalve, Jakkur Post Bangalore - 64, India, phn: 91-80-23635555 (Office) ext -161, Fax: 91-80-23530070 avik.ray@xxxxxxxxx <avik.ray.kol@xxxxxxxxx> Associate Scientist Basudha Kolkata - 78 alternate email: avikray@xxxxxxxxxxx web: http://www.researchgate.net/profile/Avik_Ray2
