I think that the ITU is actually something of a laggard on this, in the
sense that the ATSC has already announced work on incorporating
1080x1920x60p into A/53.

Main Profile@ Main Level (MP@ML) and Main Profile at High Level (MP@HL) are
existing combinations. The former is sometimes called "EDTV" (by some) and
the latter is called "HDTV". Maximum permissible bit rates (per 13818-1)
are classified by profile and level. Nothing new is contained in this
paragraph.

John Willkie, who is "fairly certain" that he has read about the A/53 work
program in a public document detailing future ATSC work plans.

Was down last night, back up now.

First of all, I think it's a great idea to add 1080 at 60p in MPEG-2
compression, because it makes it far more likely to get adopted in countries
that already have HDTV using MPEG-2 compression. So, good for the ITU.

Secondly, I don't really understand Tables 1 and 8-11. What they call "high
level," as opposed to "high progressive," looks an awful lot like 1080 at
60i to me, including in the number of samples/sec (62.6 Msamles/sec). And
yet, they call this 60 frames/sec, even in a table in which "main level" is
shown to include such options as 720 X 576 at 30 frames/sec.

Something isn't consistent.

Would be nice to see how MPEG-2 compression does with a 1080 at 60p stream
crammed into 19.39 Mb/s. I've heard a lot of people saying that progressive
compresses better than interlace, so the question will be whether it
compresses "better enough" to fit.
