> - A Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) Internet piracy > study of 3600 Internet users worldwide found that 24% "have downloaded a > movie" (58% in Korea). 80% of the respondents had broadband access: > <http://www.mpaa.org/MPAAPress/> At first glance this looked interesting. In a fishy way though (the 1st grader statistics threw me off). So after some googling and searching'o'links, I found these factoids on the web: - The only '3rd party' statistic quoted in the report is musicunited.org, which is (whois) owned by the RIAA. - The creator of the report, OTX, was founded by iFilm to 'evaluate creative advertising for clients'. - OTX and MPAA previously claimed 1 in 4 or 25% of internet users download movies. Now its down 1%. - The survey fails to mention that its not 24% of INTERNET users, but 24% of BROADBAND users (read the fine print?). - The numbers were augmented. Statistical augmentation, isn't that a contradiction in terms? - Respondents were asked if they downloaded video content. To me, 'video content' could be trailers, flash movies, home movies... - People have stopped going to theaters because it costs $22 for two people to watch a movie (last time I checked). Not because they are too busy ripping the industry off. ... draw your own conclusions.
