     - $50 for LG's U.S. DTT box - My other correspondent was also extrapol=
ating the price from previous testimony. He says no price was offered at C=
ES.

     - ***The Technology Retreat***, February 21-24 in Rancho Mirage -=20
          - Here's Charles Poynton's description of his Tuesday-afternoon, =
separate-admission-charge half-day seminar on "Video Display Technology, ci=
rca 2006" (note that I've changed his "colour" to "color"):
"As recently as a decade ago, the vast majority of video displays -- b=
oth in the studio, and in consumers' premises -- were CRTs. The last decad=
e has seen large-scale deployment of alternate display technologies, such a=
s direct-view LCDs, plasma display panels (PDPs), and projectors using both=
LCD and DLP technology. As new display technology supplants CRTs, studios=
and broadcasters need to adapt their critical display viewing practices --=
while CRTs remain by many accounts the best display technology for control=
rooms, CRTs are no longer representative of the consumer's viewing experie=
nce. Apart from all that, CRTs are not likely to be available for much lon=
ger!=20
"Issues concerning display technology will be discussed at the 2006 Te=
chnology Retreat from a variety of perspectives. As has become the custom,=
Charles Poynton will present a 1/2-day seminar preceding the main Tech Ret=
reat sessions. This year's seminar will deal with the physics, optics, ele=
ctronics, and signal processing associated with various display technologie=
s.=20
"Challenges in signal and color processing are associated with the int=
roduction of new display technologies. For the last 15 years, color reprod=
uction in television and computer graphics has been defined by the "Rec. 70=
9" color space. However, that color space doesn't encompass all of the col=
ors of film, let alone the full range ("gamut") of colors that human vision=
senses. Recently the Digital Cinema Initiative promulgated a standard for=
digital encoding of cinema. That standard uses the CIE XYZ system, to enc=
ompass the entire range of colors of human vision -- the DCI color range en=
compasses the gamut of film and then some. In a different forum, the IEC r=
ecently adopted a standard denoted xvYCC to enable wide-gamut television br=
oadcasting. Charles will provide some technical detail behind these develo=
pments, and outline the challenges -- such as gamut mapping -- that the pos=
t-production industry will soon have to address."=20
          - Regarding the ATSC/SBE joint seminar on digital newsgathering t=
hat's concurrent with Poynton's seminar, attendees will receive credit towa=
rd Society of Broadcast Engineers recertification:
<http://www.tvtechnology.com/dailynews/one.php?id=3D3644>
          - Here are some additions to the main program. Howard Lukk, exec=
utive director of production technology at Walt Disney Pictures and Televis=
ion, will be discussing the 3-D technology used on "Chicken Little" at the =
3-D session. Paul Saccone of Warner Bros. Global Digital Media Exchange an=
d Tetsuro Fujii of Nippon Telephone & Telegraph's Network Innovation Labs w=
ill cover 4K digital-cinema distribution in Japan. And Professor Naohisa O=
hta of Keio University's Institute for Digital Media and Content (and co-au=
thor of "Super-High-Definition Images: Beyond HDTV) is joining the CineGrid=
 session.
          - In the breakfast roundtables, Tim Claman, Avid's director of po=
st solutions design, will discuss approaches to managing ancillary metadata=
such as close-captioning, interactive data, aspect ratio, 3-line VITC, and=
other information across SD, HD, and file-based editing workflows. Did yo=
u miss the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year? Or were you there wo=
ndering what you were missing? Peter Putman will offer illustrated display=
technology news from CES 2006. You can check out the latest on digital in=
termediates at the roundtable moderated by Film & Video's executive editor =
Bryant Frazer. Want to know how to handle digital distribution of HD syndi=
cated programming? Ask Pathfire's chief technology officer Joe Fabiano.
"As technology innovations expand and instantaneous access to films, t=
elevision shows, and broadcast news becomes a worldwide capability, concern=
s about digital rights management (DRM) continue to escalate for those deve=
loping and distributing the content," says Avid vp and chief technology off=
icer Mike Rockwell. "But ask any editor, director, producer, Hollywood stu=
dio exec, or network broadcaster about how best to manage and protect the d=
igital assets they create, and you=E2=80=99ll likely get five different ans=
wers." What to do? Attend Mike's breakfast roundtable on DRM: Identifying=
 and Implementing Solutions. =20
Were you aware that there's FREE software for the digital-intermediate=
process? There is! It's called GraphicsMagick:
<http://www.GraphicsMagick.org/>
Want to know more? Attend the roundtables moderated by GraphicsMagick=
maintainer Bob Friesenhahn on recent GraphicsMagick enhancements to suppor=
t the DI process, including support for the SMPTE DPX format and the Kodak =
Cineon format. The existing features of GraphicsMagick will be discussed, =
as well as how these features may be applied to the DI process.
          - Some people are drooling over the possibility that some Radio S=
hack store somewhere might still have one Accurian DTT set-top receiver in =
stock. But some lucky attendee at ***The Technology Retreat*** will be abl=
e to take one home FREE, thanks to Peter Putman of ROAM Consulting:
<http://www.freelists.org/archives/opendtv/01-2006/msg00075.html>
          - There's probably only a week or two left before we have to clos=
e registration because we've reached capacity. There WILL be more addition=
s to the main program, the breakfast roundtables, and maybe the demo room. =
If I could reveal them now, I would. Don't hate yourself for the rest of =
your life. Register NOW!

     - July 1 -=20
          - This week I've listed 130 ads for TVs 36-inch or larger. Of th=
ose, 91 (70%) have integrated DTT-reception capability. As of July 1, 100%=
of those manufactured in or imported to the U.S. and equipped with tuners =
were supposed to have integrated DTT-reception capability. I've also liste=

          - Neither the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) nor the Nat=

- Wayne Bretl, Richard Citta, and Wayne Luplow, who worked on the developme=

recipients:

- International news:

     - Here's a story about advanced compression likely making Freeview DTT=
 receivers in the UK obsolete:

Of course, the same could be said of U.S. DTT receivers.

monics of the globally accepted sampling rate for digital video, 13.5 MHz.

     - A recent test of mobile TV in the UK found that 2/3 of BT's wireless=
customers would be willing to pay UKP8 per month (about US$14) for Movio v=
ideo service:

- Based on figures from CEA, sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television =
sets for the first 49 weeks of 2005 were down 12.4% from the same period in=
2004; my ten-week running average was also down 16.3%. For the first 50 w=
eeks it was 13.1% and, for the ten-week running average, 20.9%. For the fi=
rst 51 weeks it was 13.2% and 21.8%
     Sales of so-called non-flat-panel "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealer=
s for the 49th week were 84,086 units, for the 50th week 83,343 units, for =
the 51st week 78,795, and for the first 51 weeks 4,134,921 (compared to 19,=
997,895 for non-flat-panel sets not called "digital" by CEA). For 24 of th=
e last 27 weeks, the number of non-flat-panel "digital televisions" sold to=
U.S. dealers was lower than in the same period last year.
"Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without DTT-rec=
eption capability) accounted for about 17.1% of the non-flat-panel TVs sold=
to U.S. dealers through the 51st week this year. Based on CEA's report of=
unit sales through the end of June including flat-panel displays, the tota=
l "digital" percentage (assuming no flat-panel non-"digital" TVs) would be =
32.6%. It may be worth noting here what that means. About 67% of the TVs =
sold through the 50th week this year were still plain non-H/DTV direct-view=
TVs with picture tubes, and that percentage is still increasing slightly.
To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be ca=
pable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either recei=
ving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of recei=
ving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers. CEA says tha=
t, through June, about 85% of "digital televisions" were HDTV.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV units at Be=

- Ad confusions: On a Circuit City ad page labeled "The HD experience, onl=

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national =

n, the different prices at J&R in different publications probably reflect t=
