     Here are some very efficient (low-administrative-cost) relief
organizations (all have four-star ratings from CharityNavigator.org):
<http://www.americares.org/>
<http://www.redcross.org/donate/donate.html>
<http://www.directrelief.org/index.html>
<http://www.hopeww.org/>

     I understand the Red Cross web site is often busy. Americans may also
call 800 HELP NOW (800 435-7669).

- Follow-ups:

     - ***The Technology Retreat***, February 21-24 in Rancho Mirage -
          - In the words of HPA executive director Eileen Kramer this weekend,
"THE TECH RETREAT IS OFFICIALLY SOLD OUT!" Don't say you weren't warned. If
you just emerged from a coma, were just released from jail, just returned from
a three-month stint on the international space station, just learned how money
works, or would like to try out some even better excuse, you may contact Eileen
at <ekramer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>, but don't expect much.
          - There will be a Sprint-Nextel 2 GHz update event on the evening of
February 20 and the morning of February 21, tying in to the ATSC/SBE joint
seminar on digital newsgathering. For more information or to register, contact
Karol Keenan <karol.keenan@xxxxxxxxxx>:
<http://www.2ghzrelocation.com/plugin/template/broadcast/welcome/*>
          - For those of you who HAVE already registered, here are some
additions to the main program. Howard Lukk of Disney, Wade Hanniball of
Universal, and Wendy Aylsworth of Warner Bros. are joining Al Barton of Sony
Pictures to discuss real-world actual case studies of making digital cinema
packages. The movies are "Chronicles of Narnia," "Harry Potter and the Goblet
of Fire," "Rent," and "Serenity."
          - There are also more breakfast roundtables. JVC's Larry Librach
will be moderating one on the HDV MPEG-2 file-based SD/HD newsroom, from
acquisition to playout. Vision Unlimited system therapist C.R. Caillouet, Jr.,
responsible for, among other things, all the HD you've ever seen from or about
NASA, will be moderating one on multiformat HD on a [P2] card, about the new
Panasonic AG-HVX200. C.R. has provided training on both Panasonic and Sony HD
camcorders. Avid strategist and fellow Al Kovalick will be handling digital
rights management on Thursday morning and storage for AV on Friday morning.
That second might not seem like much, but it may contain the gist of an
exciting presentation that missed the cut for the main program by just a hair.
Al has also donated the 600-page "Video Systems in an IT Environment" as a quiz
prize. FYI, there are still slots available for more breakfast roundtables, IF
you're registered.
          - There are now 43 organizations providing demonstrations, with maybe
a few more to come. Among the latest additions are Archion, Autodesk, Canon,
Cinegy, Dolby, Filmlight, Olympus (extra special now that Konica-Minolta is
leaving the photography business), sgi, and, yes, Genoa Color Technologies. Is
an LCD with five color primaries instead of three a good thing? Come and see
for yourself -- IF you're already registered, that is. I'm also permitted to
reveal a bit of what NVision will be showing. They'll have, in addition to
some small low-cost routers and multi-channel digital-audio routers, the
NV8288, a 288 x 576 3-Gbps (yes, double HD-SDI) router that fits in just ten
rack units and is expandable to 576 x 576 (1080/60p mobile unit anyone?):

     - FCC meeting - The Federal Communications Commission heard glowing
reports from staff at last week's meeting. This URL will take you to all of
them (zip file):
<http://tinyurl.com/dn2gl>
     These are the ones mentioning DTT:
     Office of Engineering & Technology:
<http://www.fcc.gov/realaudio/presentations/2006/012006/oet.pdf>
     International Bureau (which handles satellite):
<http://www.fcc.gov/realaudio/presentations/2006/012006/ib.pdf>
     Consumer & Government Affairs:
<http://www.fcc.gov/realaudio/presentations/2006/012006/cgb.pdf>
     And, of course, there's the Media Bureau. Its presentation seems to show
about 22.5 million "DTV" households (the Consumer Electronics Association, CEA,
estimates about 8% of U.S. households with the capability to receive DTT; that
would be closer to eight million). It's difficult to figure out the broadband
slide, but 105 million households are said to have access to either cable
modems or broadband, but only 23 million subscribe. Cable HD reportedly passes
90 million households. It also seems there were fewer non-cable/non-satellite
multichannel video programming distributor households in 2005 than in 1999:
<http://www.fcc.gov/realaudio/presentations/2006/012006/mb.pdf>
     In a somewhat related story, the Rocky Mountain News, citing Kagan
figures, says the number of cable-HD subscribers has been steadily growing --
to 3.8 million by [presumably the end of] 2005:

     - Additional TV-related legislation - Depending on whom you listen to,
there either won't be any in the coming session of Congress:
<http://broadcastengineering.com/newsletters/bth/20060116/#>
or there will:
<http://www.ecommercetimes.com/rsstory/48335.html>
     Some sort of new "broadcast-flag" legislation seems the most supported:

     - UK mobile TV - Yet another trial, this time conducted by 02 in Oxford,
has yielded positive results. Their study says 80% would subscribe, and they
were surprised to find 36% using the service at home (only 28% used it on the
move):

     - All-channel recording - The concept has made it to the UK, too:
<http://promise.tv/>

     - The public and HDTV - According to a study by Ipsos Insight, 90% of
Americans are aware of HDTV, but only 47% really know anything about it, and
only 15% want it. This story is from Broadcast Engineering's HD Technology
Update newsletter:

     - VOD - This free-to-non-subscribers story from Multichannel News says
that, for Comcast in December, the top category was music (30 million views),
the second was children's programming (18 million), then free movies (15
million), football (seven million), karaoke (three million), and dating (a
million):

     - Off-air viewers - In some rural Montana communities, there was cable,
and then there wasn't:

       - Devices possibly not covered but receiving analog TV signals:
         - I saw no ads for them this week.
          - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.

     - May 1 - None of the lists I check were updated this week. The FCC's
list hasn't been updated in more than two months:

- Sony has introduced XDCAM HD in the U.S. (they showed it before at the
International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam last fall). The good news
is that the camcorders start at $16,800, and one model offers over- and
under-cranking capability with no need for special post processing. The bad
news is that the pictures seemed a little soft to me (and I wasn't alone). I'd
be speculating as to why, but the use of half-inch imagers and 4:2:0 processing
could be involved:
<http://www.hdissues.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=36880>
     CBS is adopting the format for its TV stations:
<http://broadcastengineering.com/news/highlights/cbs-sony-xdcam-20060119/>
     On the image-format front, there is yet another large-format system, Red
Digital Cinema. Their camera is to use 4520 x 2530 imagers that are 24.5 x
13.5 mm and operate at 60p. The technology is called Mysterium:

- International news:

     - It's not just here. Consumers in the UK are also confused about HD:

     - The UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport sent a letter to local

     - Taiwan is still shooting for 2010 analog cutoff. According to this
story, despite 14 channels and a mid-2004 launch, there are, thus far, only
130,000 DTT "users" there:
<http://www.cna.com.tw/eng/cepread.php?id=200601140019>
     BenQ and Pioneer adding DTT-reception capability to comply with Taiwan's
"tuner mandate" (which kicked in this year for sets 29-inch or larger), but
they expect the circuitry to add US$31-US$156 to prices:
<http://www.digitimes.com/displays/a20060116A6041.html>
     And Taiwan Broadband Communications, one of the top-five cable operators
there, is switching from ATSC to DVB-C, after the Directorate General of
Telecommunications refused a four-year extension for ATSC distribution. They
expect to spend about US$1.5 million replacing set-top boxes:

     - Digital Broadcasting Australia now lists 81 set-top DTT
receiver/decoders from 24 brands, starting at A$99 (US$74); 24 of those from 17
brands are HD, starting at A$299 (US$225):

     I'm told those logos are 100% white.

     - Brazil has rejected ATSC for DTT but is still considering either DVB-T
or ISDB-T:

- There's an interesting report in the Washington Post on tuning in DTT in the
Washington, D.C. area on RCA's new 27-inch DTV. When you read it, you'll see
why broadcasters are still concerned:
<http://tinyurl.com/bvqkj>

- Warren Communications News reported last week that TiVo is preparing to
release a 250-GB "Series 3" HD PVR by mid-year. They also said Toshiba is
planning laptops with DTT reception. Neither story is still on their site:

- CVS advertised its $29.99 [320 x 240] disposable camcorder this week (as well
as a disposable digital still camera for $9.99). The ad also featured a
three-pack of Kodak 400-speed "High Definition" film. CVS-competitor Walgreens
advertised the non-disposable Aiptek MPVR [640 x 480] camcorder for $149.

- Here is a summary of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) Winter HDTV
Guide. Comparisons with the Fall HDTV Guide are taken from the October 29 memo:
<http://www.digitaltelevision.com/mondaymemo/mlist/frm02203.html>
     - There are 347 models of TVs with integrated DTT reception from 34
brands, starting at $369.00. In the Fall guide it was 312 from 33, starting at
$449.95.
     There are eight models of non-integrated microdisplay rear-projection TVs
from four brands, starting at $1899.99, and none has an analog tuner. In the
fall it was ten from three, at the same starting price, and two had analog
tuners.
     There are 238 models of flat-panel non-integrated HD displays from 65
brands (including both Proton and Protron), starting at $319; 90 have no analog
tuner. In the fall it was 299 from 59, starting at $349, and 108 had no analog
tuner.
     There are 72 models of flat-panel non-integrated ED displays from 42
brands, starting at $248; 19 have no analog tuner. In the fall, it was 79 from
47, starting at $299.95, and 26 had no analog tuner:
<http://www.ce.org/PDF/hdtvguidewinter06.pdf>
     - There are 21 models of other ED "monitors" from 12 brands, starting at
$999.00; 18 of them have no analog tuners. In the fall it was 28 from 16,
starting at $479.99, and 24 had no analog tuners:
<http://www.ce.org/PDF/edtvmon.pdf>
     - There are 152 models of other HD "monitors" from 30 brands, starting at
$399.00 (and going to $250,000); 133 have no analog tuners. In the fall it was
192 from 39, starting at the same price, and 142 had no analog tuners:
<http://www.ce.org/PDF/hdtvmon.pdf>
     - There are 18 models of set-top boxes from 13 brands, starting at
$299.00; in the fall it was 20 from 12 at the same price:
<http://www.ce.org/PDF/settopdecoders.pdf>
     Compare to 81 from 24, starting at roughly US$74, in Australia (75 from 23
in the fall):
<http://www.dba.org.au/index.asp?sectionID=18>
     - There are seven models of DTT computer tuner cards from five brands,
starting at $149, the same as in the fall:
<http://www.ce.org/PDF/tunercards.pdf>
     - There are 15 models of cable boxes from four brands, with only one
price, $299.00, also the same as in the fall:
<http://www.ce.org/PDF/cableboxes.pdf>
     - There are five models of D-VHS recorders from three brands, starting at
$349; in the fall it was six from three, starting at $449.
     There were 15 models of PVRs from ten brands, starting at $299; in the
fall it was 16 models but otherwise the same:
<http://www.ce.org/PDF/hdtvpvrs.pdf>
     The biggest difference between the fall and winter charts is in models
apparently in violation of the 36-inch-and-up DTT-reception mandate. In the
fall, it was 64 models in three categories; in the winter guide it's just six
models in two categories.

- Based on figures from CEA, sales to U.S. dealers of non-H/DTV television sets
for the first 52 weeks of 2005 were down 13.3% from the same period in 2004; my
ten-week running average was down 21.8%.
     Sales of so-called non-flat-panel "Digital Televisions" to U.S. dealers
for the 52nd week were 66,450 units and for the first 52 weeks 4,201,371
(compared to 20,393,261 for non-flat-panel sets not called "digital" by CEA).
For 25 of the last 28 weeks, the number of non-flat-panel "digital televisions"
sold to U.S. dealers was lower than in the same period last year.
     "Digital Televisions" (most of which still appear to be HDTV displays
without DTT-reception capability, though I'm awaiting more information from CEA
on that) still accounted for about 17.1% of the non-flat-panel TVs sold to U.S.
dealers through the 52nd week this year. Based on CEA's report of unit sales
through the end of June including flat-panel displays, the total "digital"
percentage (assuming no flat-panel non-"digital" TVs) would be 32.6% (a rough
calculation based on some year-end estimates is relatively close -- see below;
again, I'm awaiting more CEA information). It may be worth noting here what
that means. About two-thirds of the TVs sold in 2005 were still plain
non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes, and that percentage is still
increasing slightly.
     To qualify to CEA as a "Digital Television," a display need only be
capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either
receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of
receiving DTT signals are still a small fraction of those numbers. CEA says
that, through June, about 85% of "digital televisions" were HDTV.

- I've received some informal year-end information from a CEA official:
     - HD is still about 85% of "digital TV" sales to dealers since inception,
but it fell to about 82% for 2005 alone.
     - Widescreen is about 71% of "digital-TV" sales to dealers since
inception, up a bit from the previous roughly 2/3.
     - Including flat-panel, "digital TV" (480p or more displays and/or
DTT-reception capability) was about 37% of TV sales to dealers in 2005.
     - About 8% of households are estimated to have DTT-reception capability.

- Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the DirecTV units at Best
Buy, Circuit City, and Video & Audio Center and the Sony at J&R.

- Ad confusions: Circuit City correctly said the Samsung SPR4232 was an
"Enhanced-Definition Plasma TV" but also noted it had "HD Built-In."
     CompUSA said the integrated Zenith Z42PX2D was an "EDTV" that was
"HD-Ready!" the latter term used in their disclaimer to indicate the need for
"an optional tuner/decoder." They also called the integrated Syntax Olevia
LT37HVS "HD-Ready!" They correctly applied the term to the Sony KLVS23A10 but
then called it "integrated." Then they said the Magnavox 17MD255V/17 had "HD
Built-in!"
     J&R called the integrated JVC LT-37X776 a "monitor."

- The ads - Readers have asked how to get hold of some of the non-national
retailers, so look for their phone numbers at the bottom of the memo.
     A Best Buy add for a Yamaha/Klipsch home theater system had this
interesting disclaimer: "TV and other accessories sold separately." Best Buy,
incidentally, is planning to eliminate mail-in rebates:
<http://www.twice.com/article/CA6301701.html>
     The 42 Conn's models without cents were all clearance. Because some were
listed as "integrated" or "DCR," I've assumed the others (largely older models
were not).
    J&R offered a $100 trade-in allowance.

- DVD news:

     - According to CEA's figures, sales of DVD players to U.S. dealers for the
first 52 weeks of 2005 were down 19.2% from the same period in 2004; my
ten-week running average was down 10.1%. For the 52nd week, alone, DVD player
sales were actually UP slightly over the same week in 2004. VCR sales were
down 39.8%.

     - Warren Communications News reported Wednesday that Rentrak said
home-video rental (DVD and VHS) revenues dropped 1.8% last year -- to a mere
$8.8 billion. The story is no longer on their site:
<http://www.warren-news.com/>

     - CompUSA offered a 100-pack of DVD+R or DVD-R blank disks for $29.99.

- UPN and The WB will soon be The CW, a combined entity:

- First there was satellite TV on planes. Then there was broadband Internet
access on planes. Now there's TV via broadband access on those planes:

- What do ABC, the Ad Council, CBS, CEA, DirecTV, DISH, FOX, the Motion Picture
Association of America, the National Association of Broadcasters, the National
Cable & Telecommunications Association, NBC Universal, Time Warner, and Viacom
have in common? They've all joined forces in "an unprecedented coordinated
effort to educate parents that they have the tools to control TV programming in
their home." Although I think they'll be making reference to the V-chip, I
prefer the digital system that allows one to apply a digit to the "off" switch:
