> Exactly which ATSC DVR would you hold up as an example that makes an > HTPC "junk"? Please exclude those requiring a subscription to any pay > TV service provider. You never said any ATSC DVR. Nor did you say pay vs. free. And I never called a HTPC junk. You specifically compared a MyHD/F3Q with their native software to a Tivo. They don't hold a candle to a Tivo for functionality. They are no more than glorified VCRs that can record timed events and let you select from a bunch of files to play back. And where you have limited functionality, things like TitanTV are a joke - a bunch of HTML tables that don't even overlay on the video window. You have to exit to the windows desktop to run the EPG. Half the time you need to pull out a mouse to select items to record. When the applications aren't crashing, that is (Fusion being notorious for this). There is no tivo-like smarts besides basic recording contention management. No expiration of content. No metadata. Zilch nada. If you want a decent user experience you need to pay for a MCE box. Or shell out for BeyondTV or some other piece of HTPC software. And then good luck recording anything but analog NTSC or svideo/composite with most of these (no paytv). When you get that HTPC going with 4 tuner cards and a fast enough CPU to handle it all.. well.. you may as well have subbed a HDTivo or E* box. For less.
