Very much as you'd expect, Tom. It is noise free, of course,
but it looks like SD quality. Not that tack sharp image you
get with HDTV. But in my 26" set, at normal viewing
distance, it's just fine.

Sure, and I'm quite happy with that "feature." But it is
also one obvious example of "power management." If these
boxes have to meet some sort of 8 watt max power limit,
that is one feature that will have to be sacrificed.
In that case, what I would do is install a component video
switcher, and switch the component video outputs to the
DVDR when I want it to record. Not quite as convenient,
but again, nuisances have to be circumvented.
