You can probably fault the cheap line doubler in your LCD display.  We have 
several HD displays here, a Sony CRT, and two Sharp Aquous LCDs, and NTSC on 
all of them look like garbage, no matter if it is analog cable or SD ATSC.

Downconverted HD and SD look just fine on the CRT equipped NTSC set in my 
office.
