The Chairman is NOT confusing kids. He is encouraging them to embrace a better
future, one in which humans actually add value to civilization, rather than
trying to tear it apart.
Hillsdale is not just your average American University. The fact that Pai was
invited to speak to the students should tell you something. And what Pai told
the students is highly relevant:
What I’m getting at is that your school’s unique commitment to a classical
liberal arts education—to “understanding the good, the true, and the
beautiful”—isn’t just excellent preparation for life. It’s preparation for
working in the digital age.
It has famously been lamented that “The best minds of [your] generation are
thinking about how to make people click ads.” That’s why a liberal arts
education is so important. If we have the world’s best coders, but no ethical
code as a nation, we will stumble.
