Moral of the story: increasing the number of smaller sticks in the SFN is a difficult way of providing equivalent, ubiquitous coverage.

Ever tried to climb or erect a 1,000 foot tower? Difficulty is relative and directly proportional to the amount of capital and effort that broadcasters are interested and willing to invest to survive. WHy invest when you get a buck a month per subscriber from the guys whodeliver your content to MOST homes?

The best compromise, IMO, is the big stick assisted by gap fillers, for large area coverage.

This works fine in rural areas where market into market interference is not a significant issue. Big sticks are not a viable solution in areas where markets are close together. But they are the cheapest way to qualify for those retrans consent payments.

Not to change the subject, but it looks like OTA broadcasters want to turn off those analog transmitters. MANY comments from stations in response to the news story that the cut-off date may be extended. Those big sticks consume a great deal of power. I'd bet that most stations would shut down all of their transmitters if they could get cable carriage and retrans payments.
