So they basically only want to reach current Apple customers/users?
I assume Mr. Solomon posted this for the irony of "open standards"
but "Viewing requires either a Mac..., an iPhone or iPod...".

Perhaps the most important goal was to limit the number of live
bloggers, who managed to bring the WiFi network used at the June
iPhone event crashing to its knees...
And yes there is irony in the fact that Apple has submitted HTTP Live
streaming to the IETF as an open Internet standard. I think the fair
thing to say is that this is a work in progress that is likely to
play a very important role in Apple's future. And if the technology
is standardized, it should allow other companies to develop
compatible products that play well with Apple iOS devices.
