I assume Mr. Solomon posted this for the irony of "open standards"
but "Viewing requires either a Mac..., an iPhone or iPod...".

"Open standards in a walled garden" is what I mumbled to myself when reading that piece. Almost seems like an oxymoron.

No doubt, Craig will have a "good explanation." ;)

Note: Apple has now posted versions of the keynote that do not require HTTP Live streaming support.

I too had an issue - my Powerbook is still running OSX - v 10.5.8, which does not support the new HTTP Live streaming server.

But my old 2G iPhone worked flawlessly during the keynote with the WiFi in our warehouse.

Apple has submitted the HTTP Live streaming server protocol to the IETF for standardization; it is currently listed as an Internet Draft standard. For now, however, it is only supported by OSX 10.6 and iOS 3/4 working with QuickTime X.

There was a report yesterday that Apple was testing its new server complex in Maiden, North Carolina

Perhaps Bert would like to comment on the approach Apple has taken with HTTP Live streaming, as it appears to be a viable work around to UDP based streaming, making it possible to deliver multiple levels of quality through the existing HTTP router infrastructure...

Craig

P.S. I strongly suspect that this technology is also integrated into Apple's FaceTime video conferencing capabilities, which were just added to the iPod Touch, and may be a component of Airplay, which allows iOS devices to stream content to the new $99 AppleTV box.
