Interesting developments in this digital radio universe. According to various sources, the Swiss HD Radio trials were supposed ot have concluded and report available late in 2006. I haven't found the report, although Ibiquity does have a promising site for it: http://www.ibiquity.com/international/hd_radio_media_day I've also read that for whatever reason, adoption of the Eureka 147 DAB has been unspectacular so far. I'm not entirely sure why. Is it harder to receive than analog radio? Or do they not offer more choice? In theory, it ought to be marketable much as the Ibiquity system, where the existing broadcasters can advertize higher quality and more choice, and transmit on both their analog and the L-band DAB frequencies. I mean, to the average consumer, what do they care whether the digital stream is coming from the guard bands of the analog, or on a different RF band? This matters only to the broadcast community and the RF management types. The marketing should work either way? And according to this Ibiquity map: http://www.ibiquity.com/international/worldwide_coverage HD Radio is offered worldwide as follows: Nationwide operation: US Adoption and regional operation: Brazil, Philippines Limited operation: Thailand, Indonesia Testing: Canada, Mexico, Argentina, France, Switzerland, Ukraine, Poland, New Zealand Active interest: The rest of the Americas and Caribbean, Australia. It would be nice to think that at least for radio, you can travel anywhere and your radio will work, as they always have in the past. If the UK does get rid of its FM band for radio use, as they suggest they might, that would probably create a big abstacle to eventual adoption.
