It is a problem common to most all standards bodies these days.  They 
are increasingly coopted by IP interests.  This decreases the value of 
  the standards to the public at large but may (or not) increase the 
value of the standards for those controlling members.

No one ever said that standards were for the common good.  It would 
just be nice if they were.  I have no idea how to solve this problem.
