As far as I can tell, any threat of closing the analog hole is only directed to MVPD STBs and to BD. Yes? Unless they stop manufacturing DVDs, most of the disk-buying public should not be affected. As to the MVPDs, that should be interesting. Perhaps this will only affect some of their premium movie channels. Because potentially, closing the analog hole would affect MVPD subscribers a lot more directly than any analog transmission switchoff. When MVPDs shut off analog signals through their cable plant, THEY have to provide the D/A converter boxes. And they are choosing to go the proprietary route for this, it looks like, so boo-hoo for them. But the STB-monitor interface is a different matter. They'll either force everyone to buy sets with HDMI interfaces that actually work (until someone decides it's time to update the encryption scheme), or maybe the MVPDs will start distributing proprietary monitors to their subcribers. http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/08/03/mpaa-moves-to-close.html Bert ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can UNSUBSCRIBE from the OpenDTV list in two ways: - Using the UNSUBSCRIBE command in your user configuration settings at FreeLists.org - By sending a message to: opendtv-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
