John It has been my conviction for the longest time that your postings are of little intelligence or merit. I do not see them since yours and those of one other gentleman gets filtered and sent directly to my delete list. However examples like the above 'drivel' does get through from time to time. While I don't see eye to eye with Manfredi and MacDonald they do pose valid technical questions open to debate and worthy of my time and effort to read. Wish you could follow their example. Free to air spectrum for broadcast is a legacy issue that requires the broadcaster to devote at least some programming to public service even while making profit on other ventures. That decision is not unilateral, it is mandated by law as a condition of licence (in Canada at least). The worst abuse of that principle is the obscene amount of money spent on elections and the amount spent on broadcast political propaganda. Devoting a digital multiplex channel for that purpose and serious emergencies would be in the Public Interest. That should be legislated and changed. Broadcasters can and should make use of their legacy spectrum to adapt to new modes of operation with digital technology including portable and mobile critical to emergency planning of natural or terrorist actions. What is best for business is not irrelevent. Neither is what is best for the public. Tell me with a straight face that 8VSB meets the above criteria ? I will check my delete list for your answer.
