You know what? This is basically desperation. I figured
last year that by this past Christmas season, at the
latest, 4th/5th gen boxes would be available, and the
prices down to about $130. I was basically so aggravated
that this wasn't happening, even though by all rights it
should have happened, that I just decided to give it a
shot with the best of what was available.
Another weird thing I discovered. There's a Humax ATSC
TiVo PVR and a Humax TiVo DVD recorder out there that
still require a phone connection.

In principle, that phone connection should not be
necessary anymore. The PSIP guide should be enough. That
too aggravates me. Perhaps this is why plain vanilla
STBs have such rudimentary timers (and Humax HFA-100s
have no timer at all). Once again, trying to force
people into something complicated when incredibly simple
solutions exist. Too bad people get sucked in.
But yes, I am having a great time playing with this
stuff.
