Nice info. You enter your address and zip code, and you'll get an accurate (in
my case anyway) estimate of OTA reception. Well, they say it works for an
antenna 30 ft off the ground, but it seems to do a fine job with my "antenna
farm" in the fireplace. I get a few Baltimore stations that they don't even
list.
If you click on the individual stations, it tells you what the post-repack
channel is, or whether they are going off the air and plan to share a channel
with some other station.
The *really interesting* thing is, some stations are already channel sharing.
In one case, seems like already transitioned. I didn't even know. More
astonishing, there are indeed two HD stations sharing the same channel, plus
get this, several SD subchannels too, in that same multiplex. I checked to make
sure.
In one case, virtual channels 14.1 (Univision), 14.2, 14.3, 14.4, 50.1 (CW),
and 50.2 are now on actual UHF 15. And 14.1 and 50.1 are both 720p streams.
So, you think 1080i couldn't possibly carry out such a feat, right? Wrong,
although with fewer SD multicasts.
Virtual channel 4.1 (NBC), 4.2, 44.1 (Telemundo), and 44.2 are sharing actual
pre-repack channel 48. And 4.1 and 44.1 are both 1080i.
The HD streams are very good, in all cases. I'd say, not bad for MPEG-2
compression, eh? This is impressive. Necessity is the mother of invention. I
don't know whether people have been informed of any of these changes, because I
usually use the Internet. However, when stations retain their virtual channel
number, and move to a pre-existing multiplex, the move doesn't even require a
channel rescan, apparently, although you may experience some odd behavior if
you don't rescan. Such as , two different stations might show up, when you
punch in a particular channel.
