You go on and on about iPhones changing everything, but can your AT&T iPhone use the Verizon cell network? Who kept iPhones away from Verizon nets for so long? Was it really Apple? Hah! The cellcos do retain control.

Clearly the telcos in the U.S. chose different RF standards to lock in customers. It is equally clear that they are now going to move to a common LTE infrastructure, albeit in different frequency bands due to the spectrum each controls.

Obviously much has changed with the shift to an all IP infrastructure - voice minutes and text messaging fees are the next to go away, as everything shifts to pure data plans.

The lack of an iPhone on Verizon was clearly their decision. Apple offered the iPhone "deal" to both Verizon and AT&T. Verizon acted exactly as you describe - they rejected the deal in part because of the high subsidy, and in part because of the loss of control over services.

They chose poorly.

AT&T chose wisely.
