Interesting post, Richard. Sounds like the pro brand box I
saw at Circuit City is related to the Accurian, then. I was
wondering whether that might have been the case. Another
example of an innocuous looking box that might work pretty
well.
All of this suggests that these STBs are decent examples of
3rd gen receivers. They could potentially have been 4th gen,
but I think the sale of Linx to Micronas delayed production
of the Casper chip long enough that they couldn't meet their
original schedule. Although I don't know that, just guessing.
Micronas didn't announce the new ATSC chip until 17 Aug 2005,
so that's a good bet. And we can be pretty positive they
don't incorporate LG 5th gen decoders, also because they're
just a little too old.
Which is good news, really, because it promises better
performance coming, and maybe it explains why these older
boxes are being sold out. Still, where are the new ones?
