Both Mark and Craig explained how the HD image capture is, or can be, made to
high res 4:3. That image is then used "as is" for the SD 4:3 video streams, and
tilt-scan used on it to create the 16:9 version for the HD tier. The advantage
being, of course, common sides in both 4:3 and 16:9. And supposedly no loss of
info to the 16:9 HD displays out there.

I'm not being very profound. Just saying that *if* you use the 4:3 "as is" to
send to the SD tier, i.e. to all those analog CRTs out there, *then* small
objects in the 4:3 HD image would disappear on analog displays. Like the soccer
ball. To prevent that from happening, a videographer would have to zoom in on
the ball more than he would for ideal HD. Resulting in a considerably less than
optimal HD 16:9 version, after the zooming in and the tilting and scanning.

I'm no videographer. My bet is, ask one, or watch closely what they're doing
instinctively, and my bet is that this is what they do.

IMO, the "right way" to extract 4:3 SD and 16:9 HD from this 4:3 HD capture, in
the case of sports where common sides is not a real issue, would be to only do
tilt-scan to extract the 16:9, and do BOTH tilt-scan AND pan-scan for the 4:3
SD output. That way, the 16:9 HD benefits from the extra angle of view, and the
4:3 analog displays can still make out the ball.
