It's not hard to conceive of such a scenario, i.e. where there's nothing lost on the sides of the 4:3 HD capture. But it's very hard for me to believe that this high res 4:3 image would be acceptable to NTSC analog sets. In shooting soccer or football, the ball would disappear on analog sets.

YEAH!

He finally gets it.

The compromise is moved to the legacy 4:3 display instead of the new HD display!

The reality is that it would not be terrible on NTSC except on wide shots. The other reality is that the way football is shot in HD in the U.S. is a compromise to both SD and HD. The director typically calls for more medium and close up shots to keep the legacy viewer in the action. IF optimized for HD the director would typically sit on wider shots as they do for Soccer in the rest of the world.

So IN PRACTICE, my bet is that the videographer is zooming in to the ball *more* than he would be for HD displays. Resulting in less content on the sides than ideal for the HD monitors out there.

You've got it!

If people insist on using 4:3 HD capture, then the better choice would be to do both pan-scan and tilt-scan for the 4:3 SD extraction to analog sets. Failing that, the 16:9 becomes the more compromised output. That's my bet.

No, the 16:9 is what is being optimized for; tilt and scan can only be used on the 16:9 extraction as the there is no extraction for the 4:3 image - they see the whole thing. It might be possible to do further optimizations of the 4:3 in post production by zooming into the 4:3 HD image, but the whole point is to get the legacy extraction without having to do more work.

And it is not feasible to do anything more than a fixed cut extraction during a live production. So we currently take a 4:3 center cut from 16:9 HD cameras for live TV content. If we were shooting 4:3 HD live we would take the vertical center cut for the 16:9 extraction.
