Bert,

I don't believe you can play the same power saving trick with a single
carrier system, since you need to have a continuous signal presented to the
equalizer to track dynamic multipath.  Also, the equalizer itself is going
to be a real power hog.  Moot points, to be sure, but still intellectually
interesting.
