What I know to be a needle pulse pattern has positive 100 IRE 2T pulse on a black background for one half field and a negative 100 IRE 2T pulse on a white background for the other half field, with both 2T pulses occurring at the same point in the line. It was useful for checking the power supply regulation on CRT displays (both direct-view and projection.) If the black and white needles didn't stay straight at the black/white background transition, then power supply regulation was poor. It doesn't seem to have any similar unique use with plasmas, LCDs and DLPs (but I'd love to learn about one.)
