Genesis Microchip Demonstrates New PurVIEW HD Series of Digital TV Controllers to Key Customers at CEATEC 2005 Show; Genesis's gm10500, First in a Family of High Definition AV Decoders, Provides Analog TV Platforms Simple Migration Path to DTV October 4, 2005 12:00am Source: Business Wire CEATEC 2005 Japan SAN JOSE, Calif. & CHIBA, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 2005--Genesis(R) Microchip Inc. (Nasdaq:GNSS), a world leader in the development of image processing technologies for flat-panel monitors, TVs and other consumer display products, today demonstrated the first DTV controller of its new PurVIEW HD(TM) series, the gm10500, to a broad base of leading TV customers during the CEATEC 2005 show in Japan. Samples of the product are currently available to early access partners. "Our entry into the HDTV controller market builds upon the design win momentum Genesis is already enjoying with leading global TV manufacturers and satisfies their desire to build TV platforms based on complete, end-to-end Genesis solutions," said Elie Antoun, Genesis Microchip's president and CEO. "These HDTV controllers are expected to create revenue opportunities for Genesis as well as enable our customers to meet the FCC's accelerated deadlines for DTV tuners with the quality that they have come to expect from Genesis products." "With the rapid growth in the Flat Panel television market, with 30 million units predicted to ship in 2006 and a CAGR of 25% through 2009, it is critical for television companies to display both analog and digital TV that matches the high quality capabilities of these display technologies," said Michelle Abraham of In-Stat. "The challenges imposed by this transition to DTV force TV companies to manage their inventory of sets across display types, sizes and whether they include digital reception capabilities. Solutions that drive down the BOM, while offering a single architecture across analog and digital TVs and the modularity to include or exclude digital capabilities, are most compelling." "The most unique and compelling feature of Genesis's new PurVIEW HD(TM) digital television controller series is that it offers TV manufacturers a cost-effective way to add DTV capabilities onto an existing analog platform," said Neil Mitchell, vice president marketing, DTV Business, Genesis Microchip. "This helps customers maximize their current investment in non-digital TV platforms and allows them to offer competitively priced DTVs that satisfy both the regulatory mandates and their customers' expectations of quality and functionality." The gm10500 controller is a highly integrated, single-channel High Definition or dual channel Standard Definition unified memory MPEG2 decoder designed for Integrated Digital TVs in the ATSC, DVB and OpenCable (Digital Cable Ready) markets. A high performance, industry-standard 32-bit MIPS processor, combined with a graphics subsystem, is used for customer specific applications and sophisticated user interface designs, while firmware-programmable multimedia processing engines are used for digital broadcast signal decoding and advanced, multi-format audio processing. These firmware engines enable our customers to offer a step-up product at minimal cost by adding consumer friendly features such as enhanced post-processing onto the same platform. The integration of a glueless interface to CableCARD's and European Common-Interface cards with supporting conditional access and TV peripherals helps reduce the system bill-of-materials. The controller also features a very unique, flexible Video eXpansion Interface (VXI) that allows customers to render and overlay graphics in a manner enabling the TV User Interface (UI) and Electronics Program Guide (EPG) quality to be preserved through the system. When the gm10500 is paired with a backend video processing controller such as Genesis's Cortez Family, the two-chip modular solution offers cinema-quality video processing pipeline up to 10-bit at 1080p. VXI also allows the gm10500 to be used with the customers' own proprietary video processing technology to maintain their differentiation in top-tier products.
