There was a Time Warner system that worked in the following manner:
You got a set top box that was basically a remote control for the actual 
tuner that was outside on the pole!
You could only tune one channel at a time. If you wanted to watch two 
channels you had to buy a secind subscription and a second box and wire 
from the pole.
Amazing!.
When people found out how it worked, they canceled in droves and TW got 
replaced a year or so later when another cable co with a more customer 
friendly system won the franchise.
