Good article. This consolidation happens when the cost of deploying the new
infrastructure is high, and companies have to consider their ROI. The telcos
have a bigger infrastructure upgrade job than the cable companies, and they
clearly don't think the ROI is adequate. Much like cable companies didn't
previously compete in neighborhoods. Verizon discovered this too, belatedly.
The article also points out that fixed 5G won't be a savior, because that
backhaul network is still required, for the very small 5G cells.
The article was biased and WRONG.
The backhaul Networks are mostly in place already - they are called risers and
have been deployed by the telcos to deal with the distance limitations of DSL.
Likewise, the backhaul networks are in place for existing cell towers.
And MIMO antennas will be able to create backhaul between rural towers.
The situation today is in transition - competition will deal with the current
“monopoly situation.
