Speaking of Snake Oil....
Xium has two versions of a passive, omnidirectional VHF/FM/UHF Spirlateral
Antenna:

Spirlateral TV brochure shows a box about the size of a book, although on the
webpage it appears as just a cylindrical object, resembling the "feed" element
part of what appears to be a "dish" antenna on the side of the brochure:
http://www.goxium.com/download/xwireless_broc.pdf

"...provides excellent reception of all VHF/UHF/FM channels in most area
viewing locations inside of 25 miles."

"...mount the Xium TV Antenna in any 'out-of-the-way' location for providing
excellent reception in any home."

"...most "sought-out" antenna....unique abillty to detect and passively
amplify....thanks to it's unique "electromagnetic energy core"....

XiumAir "Dish-Type" (their quotes) Antenna brochure clearly says you don't have
to aim or change the direction of what appears to be a "dish" with a "horn
feed" ("dish" must be non-metallic):

http://www.goxium.com/faqxma201.htm
[Maybe they figured out they could save manu. costs by deleting the
non-functional dish on this older version.]

And now there's a WiFi antenna--with antenna pattern explanations:

It's Patented, so it all must be true....
