What possible incentive is there for Dish and DirecTV who compete = fiercely roughly splitting the U.S. satellite audience to imrpove image = quality? None. Give up more programs for better pictures? Never happen. No one over here knows from or cares about better image quality, just = more stupid programs. More than half the audience of either system would have to complain loud = and long to begin to get=20 any attention paid to this idea. Nobody knows, nobody cares. What = percentage of Sat, cable and ATSC viewers actually have and watch TV in HD? Less than 3 % I bet. ________________________________ From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of dan.grimes@xxxxxxxx Sent: Thu 12/15/2005 2:34 PM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: Toward digital TV I think Barry's email applies to the US as it does to his situation down there. In the US it is trivial: thay are transmitting some 2500 channels in inadequate bandwidth. If our government were smarter, they would require that the two satellite services merge their physicl layer and compete only on advertising, exclusive content, and price. This would double the bitrate for every channel.
