> For me, the best compromise for what is typically available from DVD, > over the air, through digital cable > and satellite today is to watch on a 16:9 set that is 38 to 40 inches > diagonal. This is true. I sit 20ft from the screen. And as for the content - NTSC is unwatchable (in my area it is no matter what screen/set you have). Sat is ok, but the low bitrate channels are painful. I find myself routing the Tivo through xbox media center which has a pretty good upconverter, deblocker and noise reduction algorithm (ffmeg/mplayer). HD material is great, I have no problems, and the experience is better than my old 42" Toshiba 720p/1080i RPTV @ 8ft. DVD when played through a standard player is on the verge of being annoying. Using XBMC, no issues. The projector is a 720p Panasonic AE. The other thing to consider besides all that has been noted is the saving of space and removal of the eyesore that is a non-flat TV. It made a huge difference. Also with a rectangular room, placing a 42" against a wall would have worked, but the furniture would have been bunched in the one side/corner around it. With a bigger screen you no longer have the 'gathered around the camp fire' problem.
