See, what's really annoying is that this HAS HAPPENED. And the market
was almost allowed to do its thing, but for unexplained reasons, it
didn't.
What the market forces are supposed to do in this case is that someone
comes up with a better mousetrap. And they did. Companies like Linx and
LG did make big improvements, and people including Mark Schubin and many
others noticed much better results as long as two years ago.
As I suggested many times already, if you're into conspiracy theories,
the only sensible thing to conclude is that dark forces want OTA out of
the picture in the USA. It's close to nonsenical to conclude that dark
forces want 8-VSB out of the picture, but COFDM in.
Figure out EXACTLY why LG decided against marketing their STB, not just
conjecture, and maybe we'll be closer to some TRVTH.
I expect you want to hear that if 8-VSB fails on 18 Feb 2009, then in a
heroic 11th hour move, we'll go to COFDM. Instead, if 8-VSB "fails" and
we "go to COFDM," you can bet a bundle that COFDM will "fail" also. If
for no other reason, no one will want to make COFDM STBs to suit this
market.
Meanwhile, I only watch ATSC now. The only times I ever watch NTSC
signals is if I want to do a comparison test.
