No, Craig. You are the one playing games with words, and you do so because
you feel the urge to prop up the MVPD model. What Dish did, instead, is
PRECISELY what I think all MVPDs should do. Compete, head to head, as OTT
sites with national footprint, offering bundling choices which must of
necessity differ from those of the walled-in old school MVPDs. Of necessity
because guess what, you aren't the monopolistic only choice anymore!

I have no problem with your notion that anyone can sell a MVPD service to
anyone in the U.S. I'm hoping someone will offer a virtual MVPD package that
will give me the networks I want a a lower price - that has not happened yet.

My problem is with your obstinacy about a well documented acronym for bundles
of linear channels from multiple sources - these are called MVPD services, and
now Virtual MVPD services.

Deal with it.

I expected the DBS services to feel the pinch more than cable, and to have to
innovate faster. Shouldn't be a big surprise. But others will follow.

I expect the DBS services to be more aggressive in offering slimmed down
bundles, as they do not have other revenue streams to make up for lost
subscribers. I don't think there is much difference in who is feeling the
pinch, although the Fios systems seem to be faring better than cable and DBS
with cord cutters.

Your definition, which I don’t buy at all because it's deliberately made too
broad, claims that "linear channels" are the only requirement. As such, that
business is on a steady slide into oblivion. Technology no longer mandates
by-appointment viewing, Craig, and only some old-timers are hanging on to
that habit.

That's not my definition. It the FCC and industry definition.

MVPDs have offered "other" services for years, like Comcast X-Finity and Cox
Contour, which offer large VOD libraries. And almost every MVPD offers pay per
view movies.

Clearly the MVPDs need to offer more to stay competitive - that's what the TV
Everywhere initiative is all about. With TVE the cable system does not care
whether you are watching a live linear stream via their cable, fiber or DBS
connection. They care about the fact that they are offering you the ability to
access these linear networks on mobile devices via the Internet, and the large
VOD libraries that the TVE sites offer.
You get BOTH for the same price.

You put no value on watching live TV, but it is not going away. We keep going
around and around on this. There will always be value to the networks and
advertisers in the audiences they attract with the linear streams. The ratios
of linear versus VOD will change, but there will always be a need for both.

Regards
Craig
