I would choose something less "talkative" like "If you have not
already done so, mark the Black Rod as a Special Item on your Action
Chart." We normally don't add the bit about the auther's intentions.

Ah, an excellent solution to that problem!

It might be that you have already have had that choice and the time
until the Deathgaunt appears is limited... but then why can you use
Psychomancy?
