Anyway, back on topic :) I've found some time to at least make an initial attempt at a font from Simon's scans. I've uploaded it to my Google account, since I can't remember my Project Aon login details and I'm not sure if attachments would work here. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7SUHgd4eWMVeGtWb3kxdkZKa00/view?usp=sharing Basically, all the uppercase characters except Q and X are there. but I'm not sure if the results are worth pursuing. They don't look too bad when large, but aren't very clear when the size is reduced. If people think it's worth pressing on, I will need to try and create a Q and X from the existing glyphs, plus pull in other things such as digits (the maps only contain 0, 1, 2, 5 and 7, so the others would need to be hand-crafted). The vertical alignment also needs fixing.
I knocked up a version of LW3 using this font. <http://www.projectaon.org/staff/simon/Maps/LW03%20Map%20%28Alt%29%20%28New%20Labels%29%202.png>I might say that the D needs a slightly thicker line; and maybe the letters need slightly more padding between them (I've tried adding this manually, which I think helps), but it's much better than Comic Sans! :-)
The handwritten quality to the font adds to the quality of the map, IMHO. Obviously the numerals are currently still in Comic Sans, and the label "THE ICY WASTES OF KALTE" is in fonts that are pretty damn close to the original map anyway, so they'll be OK as is.
