It is not an "error" in the book, strictly speaking.

Moreover, as can be gleaned from Lone Wolf Club Newsletters,
Joe Dever often used possession or not of certain Items as a
significant element of gameplay.
For "The Cauldron of Fear", his hint was "bring the Dagger of Vashna!" -
your best route to winning the game is to leave the Sommerswerd in
Safekeeping (do you really want to bring the crown jewels with
you every time you leave the Kai Monstery? ;-) Bear in mind,
it was previously kept under lock and key in Hammerdal) , bring
the Dagger of Vashna instead, and throw it at the Zakhan (Lore Circle
of Fire will help you here).
If it's your first adventure, you can use the Psychic Ring instead.

I never bring the Sommerswerd on "The Dungeons of Torgar" either,
so I don't have it when I fall through the shadow gate to "The Prisoners of Time" -
killing the ChaosMaster is much easier without it!

Are you sure about that? I just tried to play through #9 "The Caverns of
Fear" and it turns out that if you *have* the Sommerswerd there are slim
chances of you finishing the book if you don't have great stats. In section
258 (start of the fight against Zakhan Kimah) if you have the Sommerswerd you
end up fighting a 40 CS / 50 END enemy, if you don't (but have either the
Dagger of Vashna or the Psychic Ring) you will fight a 34 / 50 enemy (and can
even kill him with a single attack if you use the Dagger).

BTW, people in the Spanish Project Aon also complained about this fight, in a
thread about the review of this book at
