For now, no. I have to have full access to the server, both FTP and possibly shell level access. This is because I will be modifying the MySQL tables directly in some cases, and using cron and other command line tools for backup and troubleshooting. That is also why the current notice is only for the mailing list subscribers. I will also need to have full control over the server during the beta, as I have a feeling I will be doing a lot of direct MySQL editing to fix database bugs. Once I have a working version, and have coded the lwoac admin panel to handle direct DB access (instead of using the MyPHPAdmin and other tools) I will no longer need direct server access, and at that point the whole forum and Lwoac program can be tarballed and moved to the PA server. I currently have Brown (Raul) from Proyecto helping me setup PHPbb (since that's what the spanish side runs for the forum), and he has full admin access. Once you (Jon) create an account there, I will also give you full admin access. This way even though (for a temporary time period) I am hosting the program & related forum, you and Raul have the same level of control (with some minor exceptions) you would have over the PA board. I'll also send you the FTP user info in a PM at the same time (Raul already has this) so you have the ability (which I dont see you using) to directly edit the files. This seems the best compromise between the control I need to have during development, and still making it clear than the PA approved distributors still have the ability to limit access, and remove files, even though as per the PA licence, it is not 'the site' or 'the distribution point' for the LW materials. I also have some stickies up about mods and such, Raul is going to setup the Spanish speaking forum and mods, and I am going to make the PA board mods mods on the LWOAC board as well. This should allow for easy integration of the LWAOC forum to the PA servers, and the exisitng mod and admin group will remain present in the LWAOC forum, with the minor inclusion of some LWOAC specific groups, such as translators, writers, and coders. This way the Lwoac forum can be moved to the PA severs when the program is done, without having to merge it with any other existing forum, or having to modify users at that time. At this point I'll drop my access from admin back to coder, and probably create a new group that has access to the lwoac admin panel (used to enter new books without having to write direct code) and make myself a member of that. I'll probably stay on as the coders group moderator as long as I am actively working on the lwoac, and if I leave/get burned out that position will be assigned to whoever is going to take up managing future lwoac development. I won't be doing the rest of the coding until later (my move is only a few days away now), so I am taking this time to try and get the PHPbb board setup. It's easier and less stressfull than coding :) Jacob Humphrey Jonathan Blake <blake.jon@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: On 6/10/06, J H wrote: > I have decided to use PHPbb to handle the users and passwords and such > because I didn't want to code one from scratch. > lwoac.sterlingdreams.net/forum is where it's located. Would it be helpful (and more official) if you had PHPbb (or is it phpBB? :) set up on the Project Aon webserver? Let me know and we'll put it together. -- Jon __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
