I've just realised I always thought flames "spluttered" as well, when you're dead right, it ought to be "sputter"! :) I don't feel so bad now if Joe Dever made the same mistake :) --- krefetz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: From: Benjamin I Krefetz <krefetz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: Project Aon <projectaon@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [projectaon] Re: Spellchecked 25totw Date: Thu, 15 Jan 2009 18:24:20 -0500 (EST) Thanks, Ingo, for going to the trouble of compiling such a list! The idea of torches spluttering sounds a bit odd to me, and based on the definitions in the Cambridge Dictionary (dictionary.cambridge.org), it seems that spluttering generally applies to people and sputtering generally applies to objects. Proposal: Change all references to "spluttering" on Ingo's list where the subject is a flame to "sputtering". Retain all references to "spluttering" where the subject is a person. By the way, does Joe ever use "sputter" or "splutter" in a non-participle/gerund form?
