I've fixed the base flex issue, it is ready to paint, assemble, lock down, and
run final tests. I'm passing it off to Nick to finsh up.
My material budget was under $5 (like zero to the club) so the approved project
budget affords the eye piece Debbie suggested (she or Nick should order).

Thank you John for working all weekend on this. I will contact Cathy Bakkin to

Library and we will need to find a volunteer that will be the mentor for that

The base is operational but not complete.
I completed the base - adding a full piece of Formica on the bottom platter for
better rotation. I also completed the upright, and did a dry-run assembly. Both
axis held stable and moved with expected force, which is great news -
especially for the vertical axis - where the 4.5" Formica disks were a concern.
There is one defect, where I under estimated the torque on the upper plate of
the base. I either need to replace the 1/2" sheet with a
stiffer/thicker/heavier material or add bracing (which would look ugly) to
eliminate flexing. Easiest solution is to set the router up again and spin out
another 3/4" disk which will be heavier but definitely eliminate the flexing
problem it now his. This should take about an hour.
I'm going to get a longer bolt for the verticle axis so there is room for a
lock nut on the wingnut.
Then the wood will all need to be painted with a couple coats - Debbie's club
paint would be welcome.
Finally we need to evaluate how to secure eye pieces and the spotting scope.
Those who have done Internet research on library scopes are welcome to comment.
As is, the following parts can be lost:
1. Focus cap
2. Main tub cap, which has two sub-caps for solar filters (NOT included)
3. Spotting scope (and screws)
4. 2 eye pieces
5. Barlow (suggest we omit from the kit)
I'm headed to Denver Tuesday PM, and back on Sunday.
